This is the story of a quest to evangelize Communist China. Teenager Erika Slade, along with her mentor and friend Monica Moore, travel to China with a team of volunteers from Nebraska. It is Erika’s first time in the country, but Monica has gone nearly every year since 1993 to “claim China for Jesus.” While on mission to evangelize China, Erika discovers the dangers of being a believer in this ancient land. The Chinese government teaches communism and enforces their way of living with the threat of imprisonment and torture for anyone who opposes it, thus forcing Chinese Christians to worship in secret.
Erika, Monica and the team witness a man’s arrest simply because of his faith in God. Team members and students walking with them join hands in a circle on the sidewalk to pray for the man and his family while bystanders inquisitively observe. Monica, Erika and the team refuse to change their methods of helping the classes sharpen their spoken English. They continue to introduce Chinese of every age to a loving Savior who cares for them unconditionally.
Erika, who starts off a little conceited, establishes friendships among the Chinese, learns from them as much as they learn from her, and grows spiritually. During the team’s two months in China, they and the students witness many miracles.
“I always assume I have a green light until God gives me a red light,” Monica said. That statement gave me the explanation for the title of the book. Green Light Red Light brings into perspective the freedom I have to worship without worry in the United States. I have added the safety of the Chinese believers to my list of prayers. God bless China.
